Who you are:
In collaboration with the Chief People Officer, the Learning and Development (L&D) Manager will set and execute the vision and strategy for talent development needs throughout the Institute, across the Veran lifecycle, including the assessing institute-wide developmental needs, actively searching, creatively designing, and implementing effective methods, inclusive of a digital learning strategy, to educate, enhance performance and recognize performance.
To be successful, the manager will partner closely with leaders across the Institute to ensure progress towards our vision of being a career-oriented, fully inclusive organization that reflects and elevates the voices of the communities we serve, and embraces mutual accountability, analytical thinking and commitment to shared outcomes rooted in a DEI lens.
Please note, this is not a remote position. To achieve our mission and foster needed collaboration with our People Resources team and Verans, we have a hybrid model.
Mission critical objectives include:
- Design and execute Emerging Leaders Program, a highly selective program designed to create an internal pipeline of management talent to support Vera’s growth
- Collaborate with Chief People Office and Total Rewards Manager to create distinct career paths across Vera’s functions to ensure ease in internal career development and succession planning.
- Create a framework for individual development plans (IDPs) and support managers in the execution of IDPs
- Post review of function, oversee implementation of the Learning Management System.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Learning and Development
- Review and evaluate efficacy of existing training programs to improve engagement, learning outcomes, and retention while meeting the changing needs of the Institute. This includes a review of existing Learning Experience Platform (LXP), and other professional development vendors such as coaches, facilitators, and professional development firms
- Consult with leadership on Talent Development issues, identify and assess needs, recommend employee development and staffing plans
- Maintain knowledge and successfully incorporating emerging trends, innovative methods and techniques in learning solutions, technologies and platforms that are reflected in, in-person, digital, hybrid and micro-learning programs that reflect our support of lifelong learning.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with third party vendors, including creating and maintaining reporting for impact measurement via training program data collection and analysis (e.g. surveys, assessments, certification, etc.)
- Own implementation of Vera’s Education Assistance program available to all employees. Collaborate with Legal & Finance to ensure ease of use, and develop strategies to increase utilization and function across all Verans.
- Own execution of annual compliance-based trainings across the Institute.
- Oversee the cyclical activities related to the annual Performance Management (PM) process including the Culture Amp talent platform; researching and benchmarking external best and emerging practices related to PM, succession planning and talent reviews.
- Ensure high quality learning resources, inclusive of development plans for staff, are available to support managers and employees through the performance process and conversations.
- Lead the development of cyclical PM communications, provide content and guidance for publishing performance related topics through various communication channels.
- Become an expert on the Culture Amp system to troubleshoot and provide technical guidance.
- Using Culture Amp, design and implement surveys, interviews, and other tools to assess employee feedback, identify employee concerns, and monitor overall employee satisfaction and provide actionable insight from the data gathered

What qualifications do you need?
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, education, business, or related field preferred; or equivalent professional work experience 7+ years of related human resources experience, with at least three years of learning and development experience, ideally in a social justice or nonprofit environment
- Supervisory experience and demonstrated competence in partnering with senior managers to address employee needs
- Commitment to Vera’s mission and demonstrated interest in and knowledge of current criminal justice issues.
- A self-starter, a builder, and a challenger – always looking for new ways to tackle problems – willing to try things and try them differently when needed
- Energetic and enthusiastic, with the innate ability to build rapport easily and desire to continuously push the envelope on Vera offerings and programs
- Collaborative, agile, flexible, and comfortable working in a fast paced, high-functioning environment with cross-functional teams
- A “big picture” thinker, able to creatively solve problems that are timely, relevant, mission-critical information in a clear and concise manner
- An excellent communicator with exceptional organizational and project management skills and experienced at delivering multiple, time-sensitive projects
- A practitioner who is motivated to understand the intricacies of the organization and the role talent plays in driving it.
- Experience working closely with all levels and comfortable providing counsel and strategic recommendations.

Compensation and Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $115,000 – $122,000. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience and performance. The salary range listed is just one component of Vera Institute’s total compensation package for employees.
