The Development department is working to build a robust, sophisticated fundraising operation that is dedicated to diversifying our funding streams, securing unrestricted support for our work, and increasing our reserves in order to ensure long-term institutional sustainability and growth. Through our efforts, we seek to contribute significantly to Vera’s growth and transformation into a nimbler and more resilient organization with the capacity to advance justice reform in an increasing number of communities across the country.

Who you’ll be working with:

The position interfaces with all levels of Vera staff on a daily basis. The person filling this position will regularly work with outside consultants, Vera Board members, and other donors. 

What you’ll be working on:

As a Major Gifts Officer, you will be responsible for achieving Vera’s individual giving fundraising goals by developing and implementing strategies for increasing repeatable, sustainable gifts from individuals to the Institute.  Success in this position requires the ability to cultivate, steward, and solicit major and prospective individual donors. This includes creating strategies for building Vera’s individual donor pipeline. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and colleagues to implement a comprehensive individual fundraising plan for the organization.
  • Proactively create and implement strategies for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors with the capacity to make five-figure, six--figure, or seven-figure annual gifts.
  • Identify and engage new prospective individual donors.
  • Help create customized proposals and presentations for major individual donors.
  • Help produce cultivation and stewardship events for prospects and donors at the mid and major levels.
  • Conduct face-to-face meetings with donors and prospects.
  • Help ensure the success of Vera’s annual gala by working with board members and senior leadership to sell tables and tickets, and by cultivating donor prospects on-site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About you:

You have a passionate commitment to, and understanding of, Vera’s mission and work. Ideally, you have experience working in a non-profit environment, preferably in a criminal justice/human rights/human services context. You are reliable, coachable, and consistent in following-through on commitments. You have 3 -5 years of experience in individual/major donor fundraising and are proficient with fundraising databases and research tools as well as the Microsoft office suite.
